ITip of June

As it is almost exam time, my ITip for June is going to be devoted to exam practice. Even though my students already know what the exam in Galicia will be like: activities, tasks... having a look at some samples might help them improve. I have just discovered this useful website thanks to my colleague María Fachal, who also teaches C1 at EOI Pontevedra. She is such an inspiring teacher! 

Idiomium is an amazing website with lots of resources for English learners. Surfing the site you will find grammar exercises, vocabulary tips and, most useful of all, a great exam bank for different levels, including EOI C1.

Listening, reading, speaking, writing and mediation tasks will no longer be a major challenge to face if you practise intensively with ...

EXAM TIPS: HOW TO OVERCOME STRESS

The exams that are about to start will be an amazing opportunity for students at school to demonstrate their skills and knowledge and prove how hard they have tried throughout the course. On June 5 my C1.2 students will have to come to school at the time the have been called to do their best in the exams and try to pass the C1 Standardized Test. Here are some useful exam tips for them not to get the creeps!

Whatever happens, don´t think about the fear and keep on task!!

SURVIVING ORAL EXAMS: B1 CERTIFICATION TEST

The oral exam is a wonderful opportunity for you to demonstrate your speaking skills and knowledge. It can also be good practice to communicate. On June 15 you will have to come to school at the time you have been called to do your best in the exam and try to pass the B1 Certification Test. 

Have a look here to know the time of the oral exam and read the tips below to prepare for it:

1. Make a good impression. Dress well and act properly, which includes turning off your mobile! Keep good posture and eye contact with both the examiner and your partner. Make them feel confident and relaxed.

2. Don't be late! Get to school with time to collect yourself and check out the situation.

3. Don´t go to the exam with an empty stomach! Fresh fruit and vegetables can help you reduce anxiety. Take a snack or something light to help keep your mind off of your stress.

4. Read the instructions carefully and balance your time because there is no reward for finishing first. So, stay focused and don´t panic.

Whatever happens, don´t think about the fear and keep on task!!

É dicir, os meus alumnos CALC - que se teñen que matricular A PARTIR DO 20 DE MARZO - e os alumnos do curso intermedio intensivo. Para todos eles, ahí van unhas cantas recomendacións!! Incluíndo algún que outro consello sobre como afrontar unha proba destas características:

• Consultade o calendario de xuño para as probas escritas (comprensión escrita, comprensión oral, expresión escrita), único para todas as EOI de Galicia.

• O calendario para as probas de expresión oral será fixado pola Escola, podendo ter lugar antes ou despois das probas escritas. O calendario xeral definitivo das probas orais será publicado, alén de nos taboleiros da Escola, na mesma páxina web da EOI, na categoría do departamento correspondente.

Por último, é altamente recomendable que consultedes tamén a guía do candidato de nivel Intermedio e os modelos de exames de anos anteriores que proporciona a Xunta de Galicia.

SAMPLE MONOLOGUES

My intensive intermediate English students are doing their exams this week and here are some sample monologues they recorded in our lab session last week. These are very good examples of what they have to do in the second part of their oral exam. I hope they help them a lot!!

HEALTH MONOLOGUES

My students at the intensive intermediate course are about to finish! They are having their last class practice before the exam and working hard to pass. This practice has also included some work in the student's lab. Here are the results of some of the sample monologues they recorded. Judge by yourselves!!

HOW TO DEAL WITH EXAM STRESS

Are you under a lot of stress because of exams? beginning to feel a little overwhelmed? Unfortunately, we teachers don't have a magic wand that can make exam pressure go away but I can give you some tips to help you stay focused and ready for your exams!! 

1. Change the way you think about your exam!! Try to manage the pressure you feel by understanding what makes you feel stressed. Start taking control by writing down what can make you feel better. 

2. Keep hydrated, which is very important for brain function.

3. Nourish your body and eat regularly. Do not forget to stay away from fizzy drinks and chocolate!! It's true that they'll give you a boost initially, but you'll start feeling sleepy afterwards. 

4. Keep to your sleep routines and give yourself at least 30 minutes to wind down before you go to bed. 

5. Set yourself study goals. Make a daily study calendar and try to stick to it. 

...and most important, let it go!! Accept there are things you cannot change. Your exam is coming and it will soon be over. So, don't waste your energy on worrying about it!!

In the exam, make sure you read the questions thoroughly and fully understand what the examiner wants before you begin. Avoid a mental block!! Breathe deeply and try to relax. Always trust yourself!! You know much more than you think you do!!

EXAMS IN SEPTEMBER

No matter what the reason was, it is never easy to receive your exam results and find out that you have failed. However, whether you failed your Intermediate 1 Tests or your Proba de Certificación in June, there is still hope. Here are the dates for the exams in September to help you try again and move forward from the experience in June. Don't be afraid to throw yourself in to retaking the qualifications!!

The English placement test at the EOI Pontevedra is designed to find out what level of English abilities students have and which course is right for them. Results will be presented in a clear report where students will see their corresponding EOI access level.

EXAM STRESS!!!

Most students at school are taking their exams by the end of the month and most of them will also probably get stressed during the exam period, but it is important not to let it get out of control. A little bit of stress can be a good thing, as it motivates us to work hard. However, exams can make stress levels get out of hand, which can prevent us from total success!!

Here are some tips on how to deal with exam stress and get excellent results!!!

I just would like to wish you all good luck and do not forget that there is life after exams!!

REVISION LESSONS FOR THE EXAM

Our English Department is definitely offering our Certificación Students some review classes that are taking place at school: 

Basic Level:  

Mondays and Wednesdays (Lab) 16:15 
Thursdays (Room 4) and Fridays (Room 8) 9.15 

Intermediate level: 

Mondays and Wednesdays (Lab) 17:45 
Thursdays (Room 4) and Fridays (Room 8) 12:00

Advanced level:

Mondays and Wednesdays 19:15 
Thursdays (Room 4) and Fridays (Room 8) 10:30

  

In these lessons, students will cover some general advice as to how to deal with stress during exams, general tips for the listening and speaking part of the exam and they will get some practice.

I recommend you to join the lessons if you have the chance!! Hope there are more soon!!! As I always say, "practice makes perfect"!!
